Dixon police enforce crackdown on e-bike and electric scooter violations

The Dixon Police Department has announced stricter enforcement of laws surrounding e-bikes and electric scooters following a series of accidents involving children, including one incident on Tuesday.

The Dixon Police Department has announced stricter enforcement of laws surrounding e-bikes and electric scooters following a series of accidents involving children, including one incident on Tuesday.

Lt. Jenna Cameron with Dixon police expressed the urgent need for safety measures as children continue to disregard traffic laws.

"Kids are not following the rules of the road," stated Lt. Cameron.

According to the laws, riders must be either 16 years old or hold a valid permit to operate an electric scooter, and if under 18, must wear a helmet. Additionally, riding on sidewalks is prohibited for electric scooters. Violations can lead to a $50 citation for the first offense, which escalates with potential scooter impounding and a $200 fine for retrieval.

Lt. Cameron also emphasized parental responsibility, urging them to understand the regulations before purchasing such devices.

"We want parents to be educated as well, to know what the laws are on the bikes," she said.

The crackdown came after incidents like a middle schooler being struck by a car at an intersection for failing to yield. For law enforcement, avoiding similar tragedies remains the core mission.

"Safety is our biggest concern. We don't want to have to give bad news to any parents," Lt. Cameron said,

While the focus is on e-bikes and scooters, enforcement has also raised concerns among some residents like Pat Emmons, whose son received a citation for riding a regular bike on the sidewalk.

"It’s just clarification in some of these areas there’s not a lot of bike lanes," said Emmons, voicing frustration over unclear rules, especially in certain areas of town like Old Town Dixon.

Despite these concerns, the Dixon Police have made it clear that the enforcement of safety measures is indefinite to prevent accidents and protect children.
